Various Types of Virtual Reality Training Mediums

The adoption of virtual reality technology in training has seen a remarkable increase in recent years, with companies exploring the diverse offerings of VR training solutions. The trend is evident as 91% of businesses have either already embraced AR or VR technology or are actively planning to do so. This widespread adoption highlights the growing recognition of the benefits and potential of VR training mediums in development and learning.

But before delving into the various types of VR training available, it’s essential first to understand the different types of VR technology.

Primarily there are three types of VR.

6.1 Non-immersive Virtual Reality

Non-immersive VR is a computer-generated experience where users control software elements. It’s less immersive than other VR types, relying on a computer, gaming console, display, and input devices like keyboards or controllers.

An illustrative example of non-immersive VR is found in video games. The U.S. Defense Force has recognized the potential of non-immersive VR, suggesting as far back as 2017 that strategic games could enhance the planning and strategic skills of the U.S. Army.

6.2 Semi-Immersive Virtual Reality

Semi-immersive virtual reality offers a partially virtual environment that provides users with the illusion of being in a different reality when they focus on the digital image while still allowing them to remain connected to their physical surroundings. This is achieved through the use of 3D graphics, known as vertical reality depth, which enhances the realism and immersive feeling.

This type of VR is often utilized for educational or training purposes and requires high-resolution displays, powerful computers, projectors, or advanced simulators that partially replicate the design and functionality of real-world mechanisms.

6.3 Fully Immersive Virtual Reality

Fully immersive virtual reality offers the most realistic simulation experience by combining both visual and auditory components. Fully immersed in a virtual world, users can interact with their surroundings using VR glasses or a head-mounted display (HMD). With VR headsets, users have access to high-resolution content, providing a wide field of view. The display splits the user’s view into two, creating a stereoscopic 3D effect. When combined with input tracking, this creates a truly lifelike and immersive experience that transports the user to a different reality.

Fully immersive VR translates users’ movements into the virtual environment in real time, enabling complete interaction with surroundings. Ideal for military simulations, medical training, and architectural walkthroughs, it also adds a new dimension to entertainment, allowing users to experience fantastical environments like never before.
